Chaldean numerology is the older of the two main naming systems in use today. It assigns values from one to eight rather than one to nine, and the assignment follows the sound and perceived vibration of a letter instead of its place in the alphabet.
Because the number nine was regarded as complete in itself, it is not assigned to any letter, though it can appear in a total. This single difference gives Chaldean readings their distinctive character.
In this system the name you answer to matters more than the name on a document, because it is the name repeatedly spoken to you and about you. A shortened first name, a nickname or a professional name each carries its own total.

Chaldean practice reads the two-digit total before reducing it. A name totalling 37 and a name totalling 19 both reduce to a single digit, yet the tradition treats their compound forms as distinct in tone and emphasis.
